Priceless: Coins and other values

Priceless: Coins and other values

Certified by the Cyprus Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth

This educational programme is addressed to students aged 10 – 14 (5th and 6th year Primary School and 1st and 2nd year High School Grades) . Participants investigate the concept of value and are able to closely study coins from the Numismatic Collection of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation. The project takes place in the premises of the Museum of the History of Cypriot Coinage and includes a variety of museum educational activities. Students will have the opportunity to hold and examine ancient coins and familiarize themselves with different kinds of values, and some of the ways in which value is formed and is connected to social, economic and political structures.

The programme sets contemporary reality as its starting point: participants become intrigued and investigate everyday issues pertaining to values we attach to objects and immaterial conditions, as well as to coins and money. One of the programme’s innovations is the introduction of interactive digital technologies in order to highlight (a) some social, political, religious conditions related to coins (b) their iconography and inscriptions and (c) their multiple functions. During the proposed educational program coins are studied not only under economic terms but also for their ideological significance and their potential to help us know and better understand processes of social and historical becoming.

In addition, during the program participants will have the opportunity to embed thoughts and knowledge they acquire during the program into the design of their own coin. These are subsequently made in 3D objects using laser cutting and are delivered to the school where they can be used both to extend the outcomes of the program as well as presenting the educational program to the rest of the school community.
